AAA Passport Photo Cost: Free for Many Members

AAA passport photos have no single price, because AAA is not one company — it is a federation of regional motor clubs, and each club sets its own member pricing. What the clubs agree on is the pattern: the higher your membership tier, the cheaper the photo, and at many clubs it is free. We read two club pages on September 20, 2026, and the numbers below are theirs.

What the clubs actually charge

Because there is no national price list, here is what two clubs publish on their own pages, read September 20, 2026:

Both clubs say to check with your local full-service branch for availability and pricing — the pages are explicit that photo services are not at every office. The Auto Club Group page also states the technical standard: the photo "must be in color and measure exactly 2 inches by 2 inches," matching the State Department's rule.

Two clubs are a sample, not a census. If you hold a membership, your club's page or a phone call settles your price in a minute. If you are not a member, expect to pay somewhere in the $10-$20 range a set based on the clubs we could read — around the same as FedEx Office's $15.95 or Walgreens' $16.99, compared in passport photo cost. We have read the other chains' pages the same way: CVS, Walgreens, FedEx Office and The UPS Store.

What you get at the branch

A set at AAA is two printed photos taken by branch staff — a walk-in counter service, much like a pharmacy photo counter. The extras that come with it are the club's, not the photo's: AAA members get discounted expedited passport services through RushMyPassport, and many branches handle International Driving Permits, which require two passport-style photos anyway.

What the branch does not do: AAA does not issue passports, and the clubs say so. For a first application or a child's passport, you still appear in person at a passport acceptance facility such as a post office or library.

AAA vs doing it at home

This is the comparison where honesty matters most, because for a lot of AAA members we lose, and fairly:

If your membership includes free photos, take them. A free, compliant set of prints from a staffed branch beats $4.99 every time, and we are not going to argue you out of a benefit you already pay dues for.

Where home still wins: for non-members and Classic-tier members paying the branch fee, our $4.99 file or $6.99 file-plus-print-sheet is cheaper than the $8.45-$15 club prices we read — and you see the check result before paying anything. The State Department accepts a photo taken by "a friend or family member," and the rules are identical wherever the photo comes from: 2 x 2 inches, head 1 to 1 3/8 inches, plain white or off-white background, no glasses, no edits. Where the branch is genuinely better: a fixed backdrop, controlled lighting, and a person who sees glasses on your head or a shadow before the shutter clicks. If your home has no clean wall, that is what the fee buys. And if your club's digital-copy option exists, confirm it before assuming — only some clubs offer the file online renewal needs.

Who should still go to AAA

• Plus or Premier members at clubs with a free-photo benefit. Free is free. This is the strongest case for the counter on this site.
• Members bundling an International Driving Permit. The IDP needs two photos anyway; one trip covers both.
• Anyone wanting member-priced RushMyPassport expediting alongside the photo.
• You have no plain wall or decent light. The branch backdrop removes the biggest rejection cause.
• A baby or toddler you would rather hand to staff — though at home you can wait for the calm minute, per our baby passport photo guide.

And the case where a commercial photo is required, not optional: Canada. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada requires passport photos taken in person by a commercial photographer or studio, stamped on the back with the studio's name, address and date — and does not accept photos printed at home. The boundary that applies to both routes: the State Department decides, not the seller, and it calls unacceptable photos "the number one reason why we put passport applications on hold." How much is a passport photo at AAA?

It depends on your club and membership level, because AAA is a federation of regional clubs that set their own prices. AAA Central Penn lists $15 for non-members, $8.45 for Classic members, one free set a year for Plus members, and free photos for Premier. AAA Auto Club Group lists free photos for Premier and free first two sets for Plus, with a nominal fee for Classic members and non-members.

Are passport photos free for AAA members?

Does AAA offer digital passport photos for online renewal?

Some clubs do. AAA Central Penn lists digital copies at $5.00 for Classic members and $2.00 for Plus members. The national Auto Club Group page does not mention digital copies. Since policies differ by club, ask your local branch whether it can supply the digital file you need for online US passport renewal.

Is a AAA passport photo guaranteed to be accepted?

AAA clubs say their photos comply with government requirements, and the Auto Club Group notes photos must be regulation-sized color 2 x 2 inch prints. No club page we read promises the State Department will accept the photo — the government decides, and it calls unacceptable photos the number one reason applications are put on hold.

Is it cheaper to take the passport photo at home than at AAA?

The club pages we read do not require appointments but do say to check availability with your local full-service branch first. Not every AAA office offers photo services, so confirm your nearest branch takes passport photos before making the trip.
