Passport Photo Online vs PhotoAiD: One Company, Two Sites

Passport Photo Online and PhotoAiD are both run by PhotoAiD S.A. Prices, expert review, guarantee and terms compared, plus cheaper alternatives.

People compare Passport Photo Online and PhotoAiD as if they were rivals. By their own pages, they are not: both sites are operated by PhotoAiD S.A., a company registered in Białystok, Poland, and they publish the same terms, the same guarantee and, on the pages we read, the same listed prices. Choosing between them is mostly choosing a website design. If what you want is a different price or a different model, the useful comparison is with other tools.

Everything below was read on each company's own website on October 6, 2026. We did not order from either site, and we do not quote ratings or user counts.

How we checked

We downloaded the home page, terms, returns page and About page of both sites, plus Passport Photo Online's US passport page and payment terms, and PhotoAiD's US passport, renewal and How it works pages. For the company identity we read the structured data in each home page's HTML, the block of code search engines read, and compared it with the legal notices on each site. Nothing here comes from third-party review sites.

Nothing about this is hidden. PhotoAiD's About page tells the story directly: after its photo booth business, the company "engineered two online passport photo services", naming PhotoAiD and Passport Photo Online, and its timeline puts the development of both in 2019. Passport Photo Online's own About page lists PhotoAiD S.A. at the same Białystok address, and its contact page describes "the process of getting a photo with PhotoAiD". Running two brands is a common business choice. For you, it only means that the two sites are not independent second opinions.

Two notes on the prices. Passport Photo Online's US page gives $16.95 and $19.95 in its step-by-step section, but another paragraph on the same page says "for $19.99 download a professional US passport photo with an acceptance guarantee". And its payment terms say "the price of the same Product may vary depending on the selected payment method." The figure that binds is the one at checkout; the shared terms say the full price is shown before you place an order.

What they both do well

These are real strengths, and a cheaper tool does not replace them.

A person checks your photo. Both describe an expert review after the automatic check. A person can see a strand of hair over an eye or a shadow on a collar that a measurement misses.

Prints come to you. Both mail printed photos in the US. If you have no printer and no photo counter nearby, that saves a trip.

The guarantee pays more than you paid. The shared terms describe a "Price Refund Guarantee" of 200% of the photo price, plus delivery costs, if an office rejects a photo that their expert approved.

The guarantee, read in full

Because the terms are shared, the conditions are the same on both sites:

  • You request the refund within 30 days of the office rejecting the photo, and you justify the request.
  • It does not apply if the photo was rejected for reasons unrelated to its quality or compliance, if your source file did not meet the office's technical requirements, if you modified the photo after downloading it, or if you ordered despite a negative expert verification.
  • The first 100% goes back to your payment method. The second 100% is paid "to a PayPal account", with other methods in some markets.
  • One request per photo.

Both returns pages also say that, because each photo is made for one buyer, you cannot withdraw from the purchase for a refund of the price; refunds come through a complaint or the guarantee. The general terms separately describe a 14-day right of withdrawal for consumers in the European Union.

The question both sites leave to you: edits

Both services replace your background, and the shared terms say their experts "may also make necessary technical and aesthetic corrections, such as adjusting the background, proportions, contrast, or sharpness". PhotoAiD's How it works page adds small adjustments such as "minimizing dark circles under the eyes".

The State Department's passport photo page (last updated March 24, 2026) says: "Submit the original, unedited photo without filters or digital changes," and "Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, or artificial intelligence." It adds: "We check all photos to ensure you are not using artificial intelligence tools." Both companies stand behind their edited photos with the 200% guarantee. The decision on your application still belongs to the State Department, so read its page before you choose an edited photo. Our rejected passport photo reasons guide lists what reviewers flag most.

If you want an alternative to both

Since the two sites are one supplier, a real alternative means a different company. Here is how the closest ones compare, all prices as of October 6, 2026 on each tool's own page:

  • Smartphone iD: digital photos "with our full verification service start from $8.50", experts verify before delivery, prints by post, a free retake if the photo is rejected.
  • Visafoto: €7 per photo, preview before you pay, 100% refund if a government agency does not accept the photo, no expert review described.
  • PhotoGov: $5.90 for a US digital photo, an optional human check for $2.90 to $4.90.
  • Our tool: $4.99 for the file, $6.99 with a 4 x 6 in print sheet, paid only at download, no subscription.

The full table, with free tools, is in our PhotoAiD alternatives guide.

What our tool does not do, so you can compare fairly with the two sites above:

  • No human review. Software measures; nobody looks at your photo.
  • No printed photos delivered. The $6.99 print sheet is a file you print at a photo counter or at home, and you pay for that print.
  • No glasses, hands or objects detection. It flags a second face, nothing else in the frame. The State Department says to take off any eyeglasses unless you include a signed note from your doctor for medical reasons.
  • No app. It runs in the browser.
  • Check only for Canada and Australia. We sell no file for either; Canada says passport photos must be taken by a commercial photographer or photo studio.

Our refund: email [email protected] within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full, whatever the reason. If the office handling your application rejects the photo later for something we measure (size, head height, background, file format), send us the notice and we refund it then too, even after 14 days. That is 100%, not 200%. See our refund terms and pricing.

Which to choose

  • Between Passport Photo Online and PhotoAiD: pick the lower price shown at your checkout. The company, the terms and the guarantee are the same.
  • You want a person to check and prints in the mail: either of them, or Smartphone iD from $8.50.
  • You have a plain white wall and want to keep your photo unedited: take it yourself with our at-home guide, then run the free check.
  • You would rather someone else takes it: a store. Our passport photo app vs pharmacy comparison and the Walgreens passport photo guide have the prices, and passport photo cost lists every US option we priced.

Frequently asked questions

Is Passport Photo Online the same company as PhotoAiD?

Yes, according to both sites. Each site's returns page says the service is operated by PhotoAiD S.A. of Białystok, Poland, with the same court register number, and both publish the same terms. PhotoAiD's About page says the company built both services in 2019. They are two brands of one company, not two suppliers.

Which is cheaper, Passport Photo Online or PhotoAiD?

On the pages we read on October 6, 2026, neither is clearly cheaper. Passport Photo Online's US page lists $16.95 digital and $19.95 with two prints. PhotoAiD's renewal page lists the same two figures, while a table on its US page shows $13.95. The price at checkout, after you upload a photo, is the one that counts.

Do both sites offer the same 200% refund?

Yes. Both publish the same Price Refund Guarantee: 200% of the photo price if an office rejects a photo their expert approved. You must ask within 30 days of the rejection and justify it. It does not apply if you edited the photo afterwards or ordered despite a negative expert check. The extra 100% is paid to PayPal.

Does a person really check the photo on Passport Photo Online?

The site says so. Its US passport page says one of its qualified experts will manually review your photo after purchase, and its contact page lists the steps: automatic check, payment, then expert verification and the final file. PhotoAiD describes the same two steps, an AI check and a human expert verification.

What is a cheaper alternative to Passport Photo Online?

As of October 6, 2026, several tools listed lower prices on their own pages: PhotoGov $5.90 for a US digital photo, Visafoto €7, Smartphone iD from $8.50 with expert verification, and our tool $4.99 for the file or $6.99 with a print sheet. Ours has no human review and mails no prints; we say what it checks before you pay.
