PhotoAiD sells a passport photo with an AI check, a human expert review, prints mailed to your door and a 200% refund if the office rejects an approved photo. If you want all four, PhotoAiD (or its sister site, Passport Photo Online) is a reasonable choice and this page will not pretend otherwise. If you want something cheaper, simpler, or a tool that does not repaint your photo, there are real alternatives, and their prices are public.

Refund terms differ too much for a cell. PhotoAiD and Passport Photo Online promise 200% if an office rejects a photo their expert approved (conditions below). Visafoto refunds 100% if a government agency does not accept the photo. Smartphone iD offers a free retake. PhotoGov reprocesses or refunds a photo that fails its paid human check.

## What PhotoAiD does well

**A person looks at your photo.** PhotoAiD's How it works page describes two steps: an AI check, then "Human Expert Verification", which it says is available 24/7. A software check, ours included, measures a fixed list of things. A trained person can notice a strand of hair over an eye, a shadow on a collar or a reflection that no measurement catches.

**The guarantee pays more than the price.** PhotoAiD calls it a "200% acceptance guarantee": "if authorities reject your photo, you'll get a full refund plus an extra 100% of the price." Its terms add the conditions. You request it within 30 days of the rejection, with a reason. It does not apply if you edited the photo after downloading it, if your file did not meet the office's technical requirements, or if you ordered the photo despite a negative expert verification. The second 100% is paid to a PayPal account.

**Real prints arrive by mail.** Its home page offers prints "with complimentary 3-day shipping anywhere in the US", and its delivery section says most orders arrive within 2 to 3 business days. If you have no printer and no photo counter nearby, that matters.

**Apps and a phone line.** PhotoAiD has iOS and Android apps and lists a phone number marked available 24/7.

## Where PhotoAiD's price is

We looked for a single, clear price and did not find one before payment. On October 6, 2026:

- The home page shows no price for a US passport photo.
- Its passport renewal photo page lists "Online passport renewal photo: $16.95" and "Printed copies: $19.95 (includes free shipping)", as the price of the expert check.
- Its US passport photo page has a comparison table of apps that lists $13.95 under "Premium plan" in the PhotoAiD column.
- Its terms say expert verification, the refund guarantee and retouching can be chosen in the cart, and that "before you place an order, we will show you the full price."

So the price you pay is the one shown at checkout, after you upload a photo and pass the automatic check. We did not upload a photo to PhotoAiD, so we cannot tell you which of the listed figures applies today.

## Background replacement: what the State Department says

Most of these tools replace or "fix" your background. For a US passport, read the rule first. The State Department's passport photo page (last updated March 24, 2026) says:

- "Submit the original, unedited photo without filters or digital changes."
- "Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters, or artificial intelligence."
- It shows as unacceptable a photo where "the background is cropped using a photo retouching tool, changing the outline of your head, face, and neck."
- For a photo whose background is not plain white or off-white: "Fix your lighting and background and take a new photo."
- "We check all photos to ensure you are not using artificial intelligence tools."

PhotoGov's own US compliance page summarizes the same policy. Services that edit the background present the result as compliant, and some back that with a refund. The State Department decides, not the tool. For a US passport photo, the safest file is one taken against a real white or off-white wall, which is what [how to take a passport photo at home](/blog/how-to-take-a-passport-photo-at-home) walks through.

PhotoAiD also lists small adjustments its experts can make, such as "eliminating temporary skin blemishes, such as pimples" and "minimizing dark circles under the eyes". Its terms describe retouching as a service you may select. If you are applying for a US passport, ask any service exactly what it will change on your face before you accept it.

## The alternatives, one by one

### Passport Photo Online: the same company

Passport Photo Online is run by PhotoAiD S.A., the company behind PhotoAiD. Its returns page names PhotoAiD S.A. as the operator, its terms are the same document, and PhotoAiD's own About page says the company built "two online passport photo services: PhotoAiD and Passport Photo Online". Its US page lists $16.95 for a digital photo and $19.95 with two printed photos, with an expert review and the same 200% guarantee. It is not a different supplier. The details are in [Passport Photo Online vs PhotoAiD](/blog/passport-photo-online-vs-photoaid).

### Smartphone iD: expert check for less

Smartphone iD's US page says "Digital photos with our full verification service start from $8.50" and "Our experts then verify the final result before delivery." It can "deliver professionally printed photos by post." If the administration rejects the photo, it says you can retake it for free. This is the closest match to PhotoAiD's model at a lower starting price. Its remedy for a rejection is a free retake, not a refund.

### Visafoto: one price, full refund

Visafoto's prices page says "The one-time photo editing fee on Visafoto is €7 Euros per photo," including a print template and support, and that you see a preview before paying. Its refund page says: "If the photo is not accepted by a government agency, we will refund 100% of your payment." It fixes the background and head tilt automatically. It describes no expert review, and it does not mail prints: it suggests printing the 4 x 6 in template at a photo counter.

### PhotoGov: cheapest paid file, with an optional human check

PhotoGov's prices page lists, for the United States, $5.90 for a digital photo and $9.90 for a printable A4 PDF at 300 DPI. It also sells a $9.90 monthly subscription and a human verification add-on at $2.90 to $4.90. It says each user can generate one free ID photo per day, depending on location and server load. The service is provided by Y Vision Technologies LLP in London.

### Passlens and IDPhoto4You: free, and you are the checker

Passlens describes itself as "100% free · No signup", with local-first editing in the browser, print layouts and a free background remover. IDPhoto4You is free, offers standards for 73 countries and, since it no longer uses face detection, you set the crop frame by hand. Neither reviews or measures your photo against the rules.

<ToolCTA document="us-passport" title="Check your photo before you pay anything" text="Upload a photo taken against a white wall. We crop it to 2 x 2 in and measure head size, eye line, tilt, background brightness and evenness, sharpness and exposure, for free. $4.99 for the file or $6.99 with a 4 x 6 in print sheet, paid only at download. Full refund within 14 days, for any reason. Rejected later for something we measure? Still refunded." />

## Our tool, and what it does not do

Our [pricing](/pricing) is $4.99 for a digital file sized for online applications, or $6.99 with a 4 x 6 in print sheet. No subscription. You [check the photo for free](/photo) and pay only when it passes and you download it.

What the check measures, from the code behind it: head height, eye line where the authority publishes one, head tilt, background brightness and evenness, sharpness, exposure, and whether a second face is in the frame. It crops and straightens the photo. It does not retouch faces anywhere, and it never repaints the background of a US passport photo.

What it does not do, said as plainly as PhotoAiD's strengths above:

- **No human review.** Software measures; nobody looks at your photo.
- **No printed photos delivered.** The $6.99 print sheet is a file. You print it at a photo counter or at home, and pay for the print there.
- **No glasses, hands or objects detection.** It detects a second face, not a pair of glasses or a toy in a child's hand. The State Department says to take off any eyeglasses, unless you include a signed note from your doctor for medical reasons.
- **No phone app.** It runs in the browser.
- **A free check only, for Canada and Australia.** We sell no file for either. Canada says passport photos must be taken by a commercial photographer or photo studio, and it does not accept photos printed at home.

Our refund: email hello@thepassportphotomaker.com within 14 days of paying and we refund you in full, whatever the reason. If the office handling your application rejects the photo later for something we measure (size, head height, background, file format), send us the notice and we refund it then too, even after 14 days. The full terms are on our [refund terms](/terms#refunds). That pays back 100%, not 200%, and it does not cover what we do not measure, such as glasses.

## Which one to choose

- **You want a person to check, prints by mail and the largest refund:** PhotoAiD or Passport Photo Online. Same company, so pick on the price shown at checkout.
- **You want a person to check for less:** Smartphone iD from $8.50, or PhotoGov's file plus its human add-on.
- **You have a white wall and want the lowest paid price with a measured check:** our tool at $4.99, or PhotoGov at $5.90.
- **You only need a crop and know the rules:** Passlens or IDPhoto4You, free.
- **You would rather nobody edits anything:** a store. Our [passport photo app vs pharmacy](/blog/passport-photo-app-vs-pharmacy) comparison prices Walmart, USPS, FedEx Office and Walgreens; [Walgreens passport photos](/blog/walgreens-passport-photo) covers the $16.99 option with a free digital copy.

Whatever you choose, read the [common reasons passport photos are rejected](/blog/passport-photo-rejected-reasons) before you shoot. Our [passport photo cost](/blog/passport-photo-cost) guide has the full US price list.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a cheaper alternative to PhotoAiD?

Several tools list lower prices on their own pages. As of October 6, 2026, PhotoGov listed $5.90 for a US digital photo, Visafoto €7 per photo, Smartphone iD from $8.50, and our tool $4.99 for the file or $6.99 with a print sheet. Passlens and IDPhoto4You are free. Of these, only Smartphone iD both mails prints and includes an expert check.

### Does PhotoAiD show its price before you upload a photo?

Not on its home page. Its passport renewal photo page lists $16.95 for a digital photo and $19.95 for printed copies, and a comparison table on its US passport page lists $13.95 for a PhotoAiD premium plan. Its terms say the full price is shown before you place an order, after the photo is uploaded and analyzed.

### Are PhotoAiD and Passport Photo Online the same company?

Yes, by their own pages. Both sites name PhotoAiD S.A., Białystok, Poland, as the operator in their returns pages, carry the same terms, and declare the same legal name in their structured data. PhotoAiD's About page says the company built both services. We compare the two side by side in a separate article.

### Which online passport photo tools have a human check?

As of October 6, 2026, PhotoAiD, Passport Photo Online and Smartphone iD describe an expert review on their own pages, and PhotoGov sells one as an add-on for $2.90 to $4.90. Visafoto describes technical support on request. Our tool, Passlens and IDPhoto4You have no human review: the check is software or your own eye.

### Can an online tool replace the background of a US passport photo?

Several do, but the State Department's photo page says to submit the original, unedited photo and shows a background cropped with a retouching tool as unacceptable. It also says it checks photos for AI tools. Our tool never repaints the background of a US passport photo; it checks the wall you shot against instead.

### What does your tool not do that PhotoAiD does?

Four things. No person reviews your photo, we do not print or mail photos (the $6.99 sheet is a file you print yourself), we do not detect glasses, hands or objects, and we have no phone app. For Canada and Australia we only offer a free check and sell no file.
